2021 KTM 125 Duke vs Yamaha MT 15: Competition Check

 


KTM recently launched the new 2021 edition of the 125 Duke in India. The motorcycle has received plenty of desirable updates along with a significant price hike. So how does it fare against its closest rival, the Yamaha MT15, now? We try to answer this question by comparing them in terms of features, hardware and pricing.



Styling

Before we get to the core of the matter, let’s talk styling. The biggest highlight of the 2021 125 Duke is its design which is identical to the Duke 200. Inspired by the flagship 1290 Super Duke, this look comprises of extremely sharp lines running across its body panels, which is further accentuated by the new funky colour options. The MT15, meanwhile, looks the same since its inception but the design is futuristic nonetheless. Its sports a robotic headlamp, beefy fuel tank section and a stubby tail, all of which looks profoundly distinctive.



Features

The MT 15 is slightly better in terms of features with a full-LED headlamp and tail lamp and a negative LCD display. On the other hand, the 125 Duke sports a halogen headlamp and a basic LCD console. However, it does get LED DRLs and LED blinkers while the MT gets conventional turn indicators. Where else the MT lacks is in terms of fuel tank capacity which stands at 10 litres, while that of the 2021 Duke is 13.5 litre, which is a result of the incorporation of the new bodywork. 




Powering the updated 125 Duke is the same 125cc, liquid-cooled engine which churns out 14.3bhp and 12Nm. The MT 15 outdoes the KTM by a huge margin here with a larger 155cc, liquid-cooled engine featuring variable valve actuation (VVA). It produces 18.3bhp and 13.9NM. While both bikes send power to the rear wheel via a six-speed gearbox, the MT 15 is benefitted by an assist and slipper clutch


 Cycle Parts


Similar to other KTMs, the 125 Duke has been bestowed with premium hardware like WP upside down forks and monoshock and a set of large disc brakes with a diameter of 300mm and 230m at the front and rear, respectively. Also, the previous single-piece trellis frame has been replaced by a split-type unit. Meanwhile, the MT 15 is underpinned by a Deltabox frame which is suspended by telescopic forks and a monoshock. The diameter of disc brakes is smaller at 282mm and 220m


Prices

With the recent update, the KTM 125 Duke has become more expensive by around Rs 8,000 as it now costs Rs 1.50 lakh. Whereas, the Yamaha MT 15 is Rs 10,000 cheaper than its rival as it carries a price tag of Rs 1.40 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom, Delhi).
